Zurich is full of beautiful old parks and gardens, you just have to find them. Many of them are open to the public. These last weeks while wandering through the waking up nature I almost had a feel I'm somewhere in the south, maybe Tuscany.... everything in bloom. What a wonderful season......just in time I stumbled upon this recipe, just the way I love it, simple and fresh, of course Italian!
Enjoying the sun, an aperitif with cheese and olives took us so long, when we finally started to eat the gnocchi there was no good light anymore to take pictures, but at least one came out more or less....

Ricotta Gnocchi
4 servings

500g ricotta
40g parmesan, ground
180g flour + enough flour for forming the gnocchi in a dish
2 eggs
salt & a little nutmeg

Mix all ingredients together in a bowl till light and fluffy.
Form the gnocchi with a teaspoon out of the batter and push it gently from the spoon into the flour in the shallow bowl, coat it with flour and place it on a parchment paper.
In a large pot bring water to a simmer, add salt.
Add the gnocchi in batches, they will first sink and then rise up to the surface. Cook gently about 3-5 minutes. Remove and transfer them with a slotted spoon to a plate where you already placed your favorite sauce.

I prepared a simple, fresh tomato sauce with some cherry tomatoes left on the twig.

It's already the middle of March and I’m almost done with my new page... almost... it takes more time than I thought. To sweeten up a bit the waiting time it’s always a good idea to think about food. Last weekend I made this summer(!) cake. Though it’s almost like summer here in Zurich, we just enjoy a wonderful, warm March, but still, it’s not the season for berries at all! Although they sell them everywhere.... And I’ve got these 500g strawberries on my kitchen table, so of course I had to do something out of it. This cake is delicious, it’s summer, but let’s wait for the right season…

Strawberry Summer Cake

85g butter, soft +extra for pie plate
150g + 2 teaspoons granulated sugar

185g all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon table salt

1 large egg
1dl milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (liquid)

450g strawberries, hulled and halved

Preheat oven to 180°
Butter a pie pan (25-26cm)

In a small bowl whisk flour, baking powder and salt together.

In a larger bowl beat butter and sugar until pale and fluffy with an electric mixer, about 3 minutes. Mix in egg, milk and vanilla until just combined. Add dry mixture gradually, mixing until just smooth.

Pour into prepared pie plate. Arrange strawberries, cut side down, on top of the batter, as closely as possible in a singlelayer. Sprinkle remaining 2 tablespoons sugar over berries.

Bake cake for 10 minutes, then reduce oven temperature to 165° and bake cake until golden brown and a tester comes out free of wet batter, about 50 minutes. (Gooey strawberries on the tester are a given.) Let cool in pan on a rack. Serve with lightly whipped cream.

It's a while...

...I know! We are waiting for spring and besides this Maison Paulette will have some changes. The shop will move, the website will be part of it and the blog already changed the layout slightly...so we are quite busy and will be done by March. Looking forward seeing you!
